Shasta High School Presents “Guys & Dolls”

Shasta High’s award winning music department is pleased to present their 42nd Annual Spring musical: Guys & Dolls, the classic romantic comedy, May 3-5 and May10-12 at the David Marr Theatre. Directed by Gavin Spencer, the production includes a cast of over 50 students and a live orchestra led by Lou Polcari.

This musical introduces us to a cast of vivid characters who have become legends: Sarah Brown, the upright but uptight “mission doll,” out to reform the evildoers of Times Square; Sky Masterson, the slick, high-rolling gambler who woos her on a bet and ends up falling in love; Adelaide, the chronically ill nightclub performer whose condition is brought on by the fact she’s been engaged to the same man for 14 years; and Nathan Detroit, her devoted fiance, desperate as always to find a spot for his infamous floating crap game. The bright, brassy, immortal score includes famous numbers such as “A Bushel and A Peck”, “Luck Be A Lady” and “If I Were A Bell”. The plot takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba, and even into the sewers of New York City.

Tickets may be purchased at the Cascade Box Office by calling 530-243-8877 or online at www.cascadetheatre.org. Thursday performance tickets are $10. Weekend tickets are $15. All performances begin at 7:00 p.m. and are assigned seating.

COS THEATRE: THE 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE

The College of the Siskiyous Theatre and Music Departments are collaborating to produce the Tony Award-winning The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. This is the first time the Theatre and Music departments have collaborated on a musical in many years.

While a musical is all ‘fun and games’ to watch, the reality is that it is a lot of work and an artistic collaboration between many people. COS’ production team is headed by director, Neil Carpentier-Alting, assistant director, Mette Kolding, music director, Elaine Schaefer and Rick and Peggy Nixon as the choreographers. Behind the scenes, the COS Theatre Department’s lighting class has worked on the lighting for the show and work-study students assisted the set and costume designers.

A small orchestra has rehearsed all semester and will perform live backstage. This is not to mention, as they call in the movie business, the “talent.” Their thirteen cast members are all seasoned actors and singers. These are students with Theatre, Music or Musical Theatre as their major. Putting all the pieces together to fit in the making of a show is just short of miraculous and director Carpentier-Alting loves the process of seeing it happen, “This has been a tough show to put together, but well worth it. I think our community is going to love this show.”

It helps to have a great story and Bee is just that—it celebrates the triumph of doing the best you can. It harkens the Taoist saying “The journey is the reward,” because for most of Bee’s contestants, the destination is not to win. Bee opened on Broadway in 2005 and enjoyed rave reviews. Writers of this disarming musical include music and lyrics by William Finn, book by Rachel Sheinkin, and the story was conceived by Rebecca Feldman. The musical director, Elaine Schaffer, put it simply, “Fun songs and fun characters!” What more could you ask of a musical. The story chronicles the experience of six adolescent outsiders competing for a spelling championship. It is a quirky yet charming cast of characters for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can standout and fit in at the same time. An exciting part of this show is that it calls for nightly audience volunteers to participate as on-stage guest spelling bee contestants. With new “cast members” each night, there will be a new set of hilarious and unexpected experiences. Theatre goers will want to see more that one performance!

The show opens April 13th at 7 PM with a reception to follow. (Please note the new show times.) It also plays April 14th, 20th, and 21st, at 7 PM and April 22nd at 2 PM in the COS Kenneth W. Ford Theater. Tickets are $5.00 for students and seniors and $10 for general admission. For more information or tickets, please call the COS Public Relations Office at 530.938.5373. For more information on our Theatre or Music programs either visit www.siskiyous.edu/theatre or www.siskiyous.edu/class/music , or call the Theatre Department head, Neil Carpentier-Alting at 530-938-5206 or Music Department head, Elaine Schaefer at 530-938-5315.

This night in September of 1934 is the biggest in the history of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company world famous tenor Tito Morelli is to perform Otello , his greatest role, at the gala season opener. Saunders, the harried General Manager, hopes this will put Cleveland on the cultural map. Morelli is nowhere to be found; when he finally arrives drunk, it is too late for any rehearsal. Through a hilarious series of mishaps, ‘Il Stupendo’ is given a double dose of tranquilizers which mix with the booze he has consumed and he passes out. His pulse is so low that Saunders and his assistant Max believe he is dead. What to do? Saunders coaxes Max into Morelli’s costume, intending to fool the audience with this fake ‘Il Stupendo’, blackface and all. Hairspray! At The Cascade Theatre

Closes this weekend!

Book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan

Music and Lyrics by Marc Shaiman
Lyrics by Scott Wittman

Based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters

Hairspray delighted audiences on Broadway by sweeping them away to 1960s Baltimore, where the ‘50s are out — and change is in the air.  Loveable plus-size heroine, Tracy Turnblad, has a passion for dancing, and wins a spot on the local TV dance program, The Corny Collins Show. Overnight she finds herself transformed from outsider to teen celebrity. Can a larger-than-life adolescent manage to vanquish the program’s reigning princess, integrate the television show, and find true love (singing and dancing all the while, of course!) without mussing her hair?

Directed by Jana Pulcini-Leard, who directed last season’s production of The Sound of Music at the Cascade, Hairspray showcases a fabulous cast of regional professional talent.  Don’t miss Hairspray — Broadway’s musical-comedy phenomenon that inspired a major motion picture and won eight 2003 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

As The New York Times says, “If life were everything it should be, it would be more like Hairspray. It’s irresistible!”
